Intravenous (Parenteral) Sedation
*Limited services right now due to COVID-19, please contact our office directly for more information.
Moderate sedation is achieved through I.V. administration of medications directly into the bloodstream. It produces a rapid profound state of relaxation to the point where the patient can be completely unaware of their surroundings. I.V. sedation techniques can be safely used in conjunction with either or both oral and inhalation routes.
The advantages to this mode of sedation include the ability to accurately adjust (titrate) the medication levels to achieve the desired effect as well as combine sedative medications with various pain and/or anti-inflammatory agents. Additionally, reversal agents can be utilized with ease should it become necessary. As with oral sedation, the patient must be accompanied by an escort to and from the appointment.
While both nitrous-oxide/oxygen and oral sedation are widely available, Dr. Michelle R. Verrier-Davis and Dr. Peter M. Davis are two of only a very small handful of general dentists in Maine properly trained and licensed to perform I.V. sedation.
